Every person is entitled to basic rights and deserves to be treated in a humane way. Respect, equality, dignity and fairness are aspects of human rights that you should experience when you deal with other people. Although these values are acknowledged across the world, they’re not always practised.
Human rights principles apply to day-to-day life and ensure that you’re given the freedom to choose how you live. They also provide a framework for local authorities and government to follow when they introduce new regulations, laws and services.
If you live in the Isle of Man, you’re protected by the Human Rights Act. It complies with similar principles to the UK Human Rights Act, yet accounts for differences in how our legal system manages a human rights breach.
Your rights should be respected in all situations, but especially when dealing with public authorities such as the police and local authorities. It’s important to know what your rights are and to be aware when they’re being disregarded.
